Remote Broadcasts-Safety & Security Part I
by John Daniels
Chief Security Officer, Securepoint
Safety and security is paramount in remote broadcasts, whether you're broadcasting from a remote location, live event, or even from your home. Having a focus on these areas is crucial to protect the well-being of everyone involved, as well as to maintain the professionalism and integrity of the broadcast itself.
Periodically, we will share best practices from our internal playbook and resources.
Here are some tips to consider when planning for a remote broadcast:
Securepoint Tip Sheet #1
1. Site Assessment: Before the broadcast, assess the location for potential hazards. Check for structural integrity, potential trip hazards, and the stability of equipment setup areas. If you're broadcasting from a live event, coordinate with the event organizers to ensure safety measures are in place.
2. Weather Conditions: If you're broadcasting outdoors, keep a close eye on weather conditions. Have contingency plans for rain, wind, extreme temperatures, or other adverse weather that could impact your equipment or personnel.
3. Equipment Safety: Ensure that all your broadcast equipment is properly maintained, grounded, and safe to use. Power cables should be secured to avoid tripping hazards. Protect equipment from dust, moisture, and extreme temperatures.
4. Electrical Safety: Use surge protectors and GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets where necessary to protect against electrical hazards. Follow best practices for cable management to prevent electrical and tripping hazards.
5. Crew and Talent Safety: Ensure that all crew and talent are aware of safety protocols and are trained in using the equipment. Instruct them on emergency procedures and designate a meeting point for evacuation in case of an emergency.
Remember, it's important to conduct a thorough risk assessment for each specific remote location, as different environments may present different challenges. Always prioritize the safety and well-being of the crew and ensure that everyone is aware of the safety protocols in place.
