Protecting Houses of Worship - Part III
by John Daniels
Chief Security Officer, Securepoint
Protecting houses of worship is a crucial aspect of maintaining religious freedom, community safety, and social harmony. Religious institutions can sometimes be targets of hate crimes, vandalism, or other security threats. Creating and maintaining a holistic security plan for these venues is critical to ensuring that these spaces are safe, protected, and available to the communities they serve.
Periodically, we will share best practices from our internal playbook and resources.
Here are some steps that can be taken to enhance the protection of houses of worship:
Securepoint Tip Sheet #3
11. Suspicious Activity Reporting: Encourage congregants and staff to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities. Implement a system for anonymous reporting if necessary.
12. Collaboration with Religious Organizations: Collaborate with other religious organizations to share best practices, experiences, and resources related to security.
13. Legal Protections: Be aware of legal protections available for religious institutions, such as hate crime legislation and civil rights laws.
14. Physical Security Measures: Install physical security measures such as bollards, reinforced doors, and security windows to prevent unauthorized access.
15. Public Awareness: Raise public awareness about the importance of respecting places of worship and religious diversity. Engage in interfaith dialogues to promote understanding and tolerance.
It's important to strike a balance between security measures and maintaining an open and welcoming environment. Each house of worship's security needs will vary, so it's recommended to consult with security experts and local law enforcement to develop a customized security strategy.
